Hi, everyone.
Sorry for not getting on here last night but I’m sick and I have no patience for the computer. We received so many comments that I had to stop responding individually and just clicked “like” to acknowledge that your comment was read and appreciated. Forgive me…
If you are squeamish, this is your warning that there is a picture of an extracted tooth below (hardly any blood, looks like an orange seed). If you wish to not see it, close your eyes and scroll your mouse twice.
That is Molly’s fractured tooth. Above the green line on the right is the portion that remained above the gum line. It should have been another inch. The rest is root!!! 😯
The vet did NOT pull the other tooth that is dying because he said that Molly’s jaw “felt funny” when he was removing this tooth. I’ve told you all before that multiple vets have stated that removing canines can break a dog’s jaw. To remove canines or other deeply rooted teeth, the vet creates a gum flap, removes a small portion of the jaw, and then extracts the tooth.
He said that he decided to look back at her x-rays from November and noticed something very interesting. In her “bad tooth” that’s dying, there is a broad root pulp. The root pulp is only supposed to be as wide as a pin. Her’s is about 3-4 times that. He said he would ordinarily pull that tooth but then he looked at the tooth next to it. It also had a broad root pulp. He then looked at her molars, they ALL have the broad pulp. He said this can mean one of 2 things: either the broad root pulps are unique to Molly’s body OR all of her teeth are bad (perhaps from a dentin deficiency) and will break at some point.
For now, she has her top canines left. He said if another one of her canines breaks (and it’ll likely happen within a couple of months if her teeth are bad), he will have ro pull the remaining two out. He said it would be unethical to pull them at this point when he’s unsure if they are bad and doing so would risk breaking her jaw.
So going forward, Molly is not allowed to have any hard chew toys (nylabones, kongs, antlers, etc.), only plush toys.
She’s on 2 pain medicines – Previcox and Tramadol – and is doing a lot better today than she was yesterday, although she did wake up shaking but I think that’s because the subcutaneous pain medicine wore off finally.
The regular CBC came back and showed no abnormalities. The thyroid results should be back by Thursday.
Molly told me to tell everyone “Thank you” for all the POTP and caring messages you have sent. She and I are gonna go snuggle and sleep away the pain/sick.
Thank you for the update. I hope everyone feels better soon. Cuddles and hugs.

Hi Guys – We were advised by our vet to do the “kneecap test” re any dog toy/treat! You take the toy/treat and vigorously hit your kneecap with it. If it hurts, it is too hard and will simply increase the chance of broken teeth. It’s an interesting concept which we have applied to all things Ray! 🙂

Our vet said that dog’s teeth (healthy teeth) can withstand A LOT! He said his own German Shepard enjoys nothing more than chewing rocks and it has done no harm to his teeth. However, I have decided to replace Macy’s nylabone with a kong and Molly, well, she’s out of luck! Poor girl. When we walked in from the vet’s office (day of surgery) she ran into the living room and grabbed Macy’s nylabone before I could pick it up. Crazy dog…

I guess there is a conflict in vet’s theories. Our vet explained that Ray’s jaw capability is such that he could have severed our neighbor’s arm (another story – it’s in the book!), and yet his teeth could be damaged as a result of that much power on a solid object. We chose to err on the side of caution.

I absolutely agree! Even before speaking with him, I was planning on replacing the nylabones with kongs. Damage aside, I don’t like the idea of my babies ingesting plastic.

With everything that happened with Mya and Khia, and now Molly, I have decided that no two vets will give you the same information. Makes it difficult to know who to believe.

hugs to you and to molly, healing thoughts and weim-kisses. I hope you both feel better soon. Tramadol is a good pain med, my mom has it for her hell-bow and it works great. hope a good nap helps to chase the pains and all sickness away…

Thanks, Easy. Greg takes Tramadol too. He was prescribed a 50 mg tablet 1-2 times a day. The vet prescribed Molly (1/4 Greg’s weight 2 (yes, 2!) 50 mg tablets 2-3 times a day!!! He’s trying to knock her out! We didn’t feel comfortable giving her 2 at a time and have only been doing 1. She seems to be okay and loopy enough! Lots of love my beautiful friends, Samantha

You give very soft and fluffy hugs, Princess Leah. Molly said thank you for calling her brave. She didn’t feel very brave and barked the whole time she was there. I think your love and hugs are helping already. Lots of love, Samantha

Aww. I’m sorry to hear that! It always makes me a little sad when I hear about people not having good experiences with their docs. It means we as caregivers are not doing what we should be doing. I hope it gets better for you, or that maybe a more personable physician comes along. Hugs! -phoebe

I think people, in all professions, become jaded. I bet he wasn’t always like that. Something happened to make him be that way.

Yes you are right. Unfortunately this is a growing problem among physicians…even young physicians my age. That’s actually one of the reasons I started writing poetry…to keep the ‘fire’ alive…and to process feelings in a healthy way so that I don’t also become jaded… 🙂

Don’t worry about answering comments……we are just trying to be supportive and don’t need you to tell us how fabulous we all are (hahahahaha)! Seriously, the tooth issue with Molly is interesting – absolutely NEVER heard of anything like this and it’s just a shame because you have to wonder if she’s been uncomfortable for a long time. Poor baby. Hoping the rest of the blood work looks good – she already has enough on her plate (as do all of you!) with the teeth for now.
Hugs, Sammy and Mom Pam

Hi, Sammy and Pam (I literally almost wrote Pammy -.-). It’s very frustrating as her advocate to know that she’s now been through 3 dental procedures requiring anesthesia in the last 3 months, and there are still questions about whether or not more or necessary. Every time she’s put under, I’m afraid I’m going to lose her. Dentals for some reason are extremely risky and I hate doing this to her. Leave it to me to pick the dog with potentially weird root systems, ha! Thanks for the hugs. Can you send chicken soup through the computer? That would help, too! Lots of love, Samantha

*sigh* I used to be Mom’s doctor when she was sick but now I have to sit back and watch because her and Molly are holed up in the bedroom with a gate locking Macy and me out. I just keep reminding myself that this isn’t gonna last forever.

Hi Noodle sweetie. Just be glad it’s not you who had the tooth pulled! Puts it into a different light, eh? You’ll have your Mom back soon, try to be patient, although I know that’s not in our nature. ❤ And tell your Mom I hope she is better soon.

Hey, wanna know something? I’m missing 10 teeth! The mobile vet that I saw the one time said they likely never came in. No one ever pointed that out to Mom before. So hopefully I NEVER need teeth pulled because I’m already 10 short.
