As I told you in my last post, Mom and Dad have been trying to be extra careful and observant with all of us.
Yesterday afternoon, we all went out in the yard together. Molly and Macy were playing like they always do. Mom tried stopping them before things got out of hand but….it didn’t work. Molly decided she was done playing and started biting Macy’s side. Macy was trying to get away and neither one would submit to Mom OR Dad. FINALLY, Mom and Dad broke them up. There was blood on Macy’s side and Mom thought Molly ripped her open but it wasn’t Macy’s blood…it was Molly’s! (Macy was fine.)
Molly’s lower left canine broke at the gum line and her tooth was bleeding!
Mom called the vet and the vet said if the bleeding stopped, it could wait until tomorrow (today). Mom got it to stop and for the rest of the day, Molly was separated from all of us.
Everyone took turns being crated or locked in Mom and Dad’s room.
I was very sad and confused.
Molly was very sad, too. She just wanted to be held.
This morning, it was very cold outside and we all got to wear our sweaters. Mom let Macy and me out first and then let Molly out of her crate to put her sweater on. Mom said Molly was SOOOOOO excited for her sweater. She put it on and you know what Molly did? She ran into Mom and Dad’s room and curled up in bed.
As soon as the vet opened, Mom brought Molly in.
They said their surgery schedule was packed for the day but they would try to get her in. At the very least, they were going to numb her jaw and give her a pain med injection. The doctor was very happy that Mom gave Molly some of the leftover Previcox from her dental work.
So now, there are 2 questions:
- Was the tooth broken/cracked all along and that’s why she’s been a grumbly-butt?
OR
2. Is the tooth secondary?
I have a favor to ask all of you:
Please don’t hate Molly. Please don’t hold this against her breed. Please still love her. I do. She doesn’t deserve hatred. We don’t know what her past did to her. She needs love and understanding.
Never going to hate her or the breed. It is never the dog’s fault. Who knows what she went through. You’re helping her so much, and I applaud you for being open to all options. I wanted to ask, have you considered using a muzzle (and maybe on Macy, too, depending on their interaction) when she interacts with the other dogs? I’ve recently read an interesting article about muzzles as helpful tools, and the prejudice surrounding them… couldn’t find it yet though.

Our Ray had to go through a muzzle stage so if there are any questions, we would be pleased to answer as best we can. Colin.

I think that is something we may do – a soft muzzle. Then she doesn’t have to be isolated and she can’t hurt the others. Thanks, Colin!

Do not, under any circumstances, buy the cloth type that the vets use. They are designed for a vet situation where short term control is necessary, and could be considered cruel in longer term circumstances. We ended up with a Baskerville style which provided the desired protection but still allowed open mouth breathing and (more importantly to Ray) allowed him to still take treats.

Oh, I would never do that! Thank you for the brand suggestion 🙂

I know you do. By the way if you haven’t it might be a good idea to mention to the vet about how sore Molly’s tummy was the other day. That might be a part of all of this.

gosh Molly isn’t well so she can’t help it,if she was a human she could tell you what is wrong, but she isn’t and can’t tell so its a case of figuring out exactly what is wrong. So how could we hate her for not feeling her self.when everything is figured out and she gets the right treatment I am sure things will improve,we just hope that it is all sorted soon.you had said she didn’t like her tummy touched, have you thought of having an exray done or an ultra sound to see if there is any thing there?xx Rachel

Thank you for having her back, Rachel. An x-ray or ultrasound is on the list of things to do. That seemed to have been an isolated incident but we can’t be too sure because, as you said, she can’t talk!

Noodle my friend of course we don’t hate Molly – poor girl has had who knows WHAT in her life and she has found heaven in your family – if she did in fact her a bad/fractured tooth she may have been uncomfortable and extra grumpy causing all kinds of issues. She can’t help how she is and we know that – we just don’t want the rest of you to be “accidental victims” of whatever is causing Molly’s distress. Know what I mean? But hate Molly??? No……no way…….she’s a sweetheart just looking to find her place.
Love, Sammy

Oh so sad!
I hope she was just a grumpy butt because of a damaged tooth, that would solve things nicely.
To keep the peace in your pack, make sure everyone is getting enough exercise with mom and dad – not just play time with each other. Mental stimulation like learning new things/tricks is also a great idea.
Submitting doesn’t really work, that’s an old school though based on dominance theory. Check out Karen Overall’s relaxation protocol – http://www.dogdaysnw.com/doc/Protocol_for_Relaxation-_Karen_Overall.pdf
It really does work, we use it with all the bullies we’ve worked with. I originally was a follower of dominance based theories but all my research has changed that. It’s proven to not work and make most situations worse. 🙂
Love and patience, time outs, exercise, socialization, individual training times are the key! Please email me if you need any help or have specific questions I have lots of bully breed experience. dzdogadventures@gmail.com

Hating Molly is impossible. She is too sad. Hating her breed is not even on the radar! Even after a pit bull bit me, I still worked side by side with Dottie – a pit bull therapy dog who works with us at the VA. Mom says I could learn a LOT from Dottie’s good behavior. This is all tough enough for your family without having to worry about that, N. Hang in there. We’re all hanging in with you. xoxo

Awww, Poor Molly! How could we hate her? She’s clearly a doll under the right circumstances. Only right now, for reasons yet to be determined, are not the right circumstances. We are all waiting and worrying with you for the test results. The muzzle is a great suggestion. Almost had to go that route with Miss D. It would at least allow the dogs to continue to interact while you find a new home for Molly

We would never think bad of Molly. Something is causing her to be the way she is. You all have loved her to pieces. The fact that she feels bad afterward also says something. We just hope the tests show something that will be able to answer your questions and explain everything. Molly is a good dog in her heart. You are doing all the right things.

Good golly Miss Molly! We could never hate Molly. She is a wonderful Woofie. I really believe or we do that Molly would be happier in a one dog family. Molly has probably had a sore tooth for some time and this would explain her aggressiveness. But we don’t know for sure. We just know Molly is a good dog that has suffered in the past and as a result is aggressive to other canines. Are we all not creatures of our experiences?

Thank you for your honesty AND your support. You have a personal reason for your fear – it’s not just the stigma that made you fear them. I wish you could’ve met Khia. She would have gotten you over your fear. She was almost twice Molly’s size, too. *ear licks*
