Friends! Can you believe it’s Monday already?!?!
Where shall I take you this Monday? Hmmmm……
Oh! I know! Let me tell you about the time Mom and Dad rescued a whole litter of baby possums. September 2014.
Do you see how many there are in there?!?!?! They were sleeping in this pic – it was the middle of the day.
It seems that there was a whole litter of baby possums under our house and, unfortunately, Dad accidentally spooked mama possum off and she never returned. One by one, Dad caught them in live traps.
This one was covered in poo and ants so Dad hosed it off gently. Look at that silly thing!!!!
Wide awake during the night!
My Mom and Dad figured they’d raise the babies until they were big enough to be “safe” from predators. Yes, my loving Mom and Dad can’t resist ANY creature.
This wasn’t the first time they did a possum rescue mission!
No, here’s the litter they saved May 2014:
They were much smaller!
And MUCH tamer!
Mom fell in love with them!
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT POSSUMS
- Did you know that, contrary to popular belief, possums RARELY carry rabies? Their low body temperature makes it very difficult for the disease to survive.
- However, they can contract distemper and it is a REALLY sad sight to see one suffering from it.
- They eat a variety of things including bugs, fruits, eggs, frogs, snails, slugs, even skeletons of road kill!
- They will fight off cockroaches and rats, even killing them, to get first dibs on the snails and slugs in your garden.
- They have 50 teeth!
- Possums will drool excessively for 2 reasons – self-defense (who wants to be drooled on) and extreme contentedness.
SO, if you have a possum and you are petting it, you will be covered in drool. Just ask Mom because it happened with the baby in the pic just above!
Yikes! Your parents are kind and BRAVE. If mom saw possums near our house she would have a heart attack and start packing so we could move. Sometime, I would like to eat a frog, a snail, or a skeleton!!! Wow!
Love and licks,

Cupcake, tell her not to be scared! They are okay. I think frogs and snails would be too slimy for me. Skeletons are delicious though! *ear licks* Noodle

We see possums frequently in our yard…….once in a while we see one on our front porch helping himself to the water bowl we keep out there!! We love that your Mom has rescued babies before – they are adorable.

They are ADORABLE!! How did the release go? Do you all see them around?

The first set of babies was sent off to a rescue, so we are unsure how the release went. Unfortunately, the 2nd set didn’t fare too well. They were all very sick and had to be euthanized 😥

Wow, you guys are really pawsome for saving those babies. Good for you. They kind of scare me but I’m just not used to them I guess. Good luck raising the clan.

I think once you see babies, they become less scary. Plus, if you’ve ever had/seen a hedgehog, their teeth are almost identical and that makes them less scary too!

OMD! I don’t think this is an evil cat like Jamison. I am just being careful. It looks like the possums ate Jamison’s food. BOL! BOL! Maybe that’s why he is so hateful – all the rescues your folks bring in eat his food.

Good thing Choppy didn’t see those – she loves to chase possums! Many a possum has ended up playing dead for her (which is another fun little possum fact!).
