The scariest day of the whole year is coming up. Yes, even scarier than annual exam day at the vet where they put that cold thing in your tushy! It’s almost the 4th of July. That means loud, scary, booming death stars!

As a fellow dog, I feel it is my duty to relay to you some VERY important things:

1) Make sure your dog/cat/other pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag.

  • You should always have a collar w/ ID on us but if you don’t, make sure you do on this day. Sometimes we get spooked and run out the door, dig under the fence, or even JUMP the fence!
  • Don’t assume because your pet is micro-chipped that someone will take them to the vet to be scanned.

2) If you know your dog/cat/other pet is scared of the fireworks, there are a couple precautions you can take:

  • Provide them access to somewhere they feel safe/comfortable such as their kennel, a closet, under a blanket, etc.
  • Turn your TV or the stereo on to drown out some of the noise
  • If they have a thunder shirt, put it on them. Personally, I use Nutri-Vet Pet Ease Calming Bones. They are DE-LICIOUS and work so much better than Xanax.
  • Don’t let them go outside to do their business alone! Please refer to the details of #1. Also, an accident in the house is better than us getting lost because we got scared.

Finally, make sure you have up-to-date pictures of your dogs, cats, and other pets JUST IN CASE. That way, if they get loose, you can show people what they look like (not what they looked like when they were a puppy or 15 lbs ago).

If you have any other suggestions, please email them to me at noodle4president@gmail.com so that I can add them to this public service announcement. (Ooooooh, how professional sounding *snicker*)

Wishing all of you a SAFE and Happy 4th of July!

  4. We always turn the TV up while the fireworks are booming so the dogs don’t hear them as much.

  7. Great advice, Noodle. While Sam isn’t terribly bothered by fireworks (unless they are exceptional loud), I’ll be cranking up the dance music this weekend! Have a safe and happy 4th of July. 🙂

Wonderful information. Collars are put on first thing in the morning each day. The come off, last thing at night. They never go out without and leash and me on the other end. I pray for rain every year. There are too many people that a shooting off firecrackers. It is illegal in Florida, but nothing is done to stop it. The Thundershirt is ready for Sid. There are fireworks going off as I type. It usually starts before the 4th and end way after.
