What a relief! She’s home!!!
This morning, Mom and Dad left the house with her and then they came home WITHOUT her. THEN, Mom took macy’s bed out of her crate and started disinfecting it. I thought Macy was dead! I was all sorts of freaked out. It didn’t take long for Mom to realize what she did.
So now I’m sitting guard by Macy’s crate to make sure nothing happens to her.
I’m going to let Mom take over now because I don’t understand all of this medical stuff.
Hi, everyone!
Macy had 2 procedures done today during surgery: the grinding of the bone to fix the patellar luxation AND the TPLO. It turns out that her ACL was completely torn but, luckily, her meniscus was intact.
She has approximately 50 sutures inside and 6 outside. The surgery took about an hour and fifteen minutes.
The surgeon said she expects a 2 month recovery. For the first 2 weeks, it’s outside just to pee and poop and then right back inside. Then we can up her walks by 5-10 mins every 2 weeks after. Physical therapy is not necessary but we can do it if we would like, and we can continue the cold laser therapy.
She also said that playing and being active is good for Macy’s hip dysplasia. It keeps the surrounding muscles strong. She said that so long as she stays active and doesn’t become overweight, the prognosis is good. Also, 85% of dogs with hip dysplasia never need surgery. (YESSSSSSSSSSSS!)
She was adorable when waking up from the anesthesia:
She was given Rimadyl and another pain killer before we even saw her. They sent her home with Tramadol and she’s allowed to have 1-2 every 8 hours, along with her normal Previcoxx and joint supplements, starting tomorrow morning.
She’s currently resting in her crate, in between bouts of waking up crying something awful. I’ll be so happy when the anesthetic wears off. I remember how much Noodle cried until it wore off when he was neutered.
Here’s a video of one of her “fits”:
It’s absolutely heartbreaking.
Now, for inquisitive minds, here are some pics of the x-rays and of her incision. I don’t think there’s anything too bad even if you are squeamish.
We were originally told the incision would be fairly small but I guess she needed more room to do what she had to do? Oh, well. As long as she gets better, that’s all I care about!
I’m off to rest while she’s quiet. Normally a decaffeinated coffee drinker, I just drank caffeinated so I can stay up with her if need be. Most of you know me well enough to know that I’ll be sleeping on the floor by her crate tonight.
I, or Noodle, will pop on tomorrow to post an update.
Thank you for all the POTP you sent!!!!
I remember the day I brought Josie home from her surgery. The crying from the anesthesia was so painful to hear. And her incision was also a lot bigger than I expected. It’s so hard to know, and tell yourself, that the immediate pain is for a greater good. But in a couple months, when Macy has bounced back, you’ll realize it was worth it.
She’s extremely lucky to have you guys in her life to help with this.
We’re thinking about you over here. Hope she heals fast.

I wish I had remembered about the anesthesia-induced crying. My heart shatters each time she does it. Thanks for stopping by and for the emotional support. *Hugs*

Oh poor, Macy! That crying video is a killer. What a bummer. Mom and I said prayers, so you will get better and better each day. Hang in there, sweetie. You have been very brave.

I cried to hear Macy cry – but Mom and I are so happy that all is well and she is home where she is loved a whole bunch, and that everybody is having a slumber party to keep her company. I’ll bet your Mom is chasing her tail with joy. I am.

I don’t remember very much about when I was at the vet for an operation – but Mom says they kept me there until I was awake, then called her right away to let her know to come get me (she was practically pacing outside their doors, I think). She would have freaked if she had heard me whimper in my sleep like Macy.
I have a really great vet – and all of the 2-legses at her office are great too. I love to go visit them – and they all love me too. AND they’re nice to Mom. Like, they knew she was already a wreck, so they called the minute my operation was done, just to tell her that I was safe and sleeping.
Love makes all the difference – so I bet Macy will be up and around really fast.

Ideally, our vet does that but Macy’s surgery ran late – until 5:15. The office closes at 5. Originally, they told Mom they were going to have to keep her bc she wouldn’t be ready to go at closing. Mom said no way since there’s no one at the clinic at night. So mom and dad went and sat with her until she woke up and then brought her home around 6:45. The techs said they would stay longer to wait but mom and dad felt confident that they could take care of her. Macy and I love going to the vet, too. They all obsess over us. We’ve even been told we’re their favorites. 😊 *Ear licks*

Your Mom and Dad are heroes! I can’t even think how scared poor Macy would have been to wake up alone in a cage at the vets, with not a soul to comfort her.
Mom would have broken me out, I’ll bet, if it came to that (but it never would). We’re so lucky to have good vets. Mom says she had to find a whole new hospital for Bandit, Tabitha & Tuxedo when she lived in Knoxville.
She watched one of the owners flip his LID when a customer refused to leave with a wet dog just because it was “too late to expect him to take the time to blow dry.” She had traveled over an hour from her home – but saying that only made that man even madder.
Once the man spent an angry few moments drying the dog only a bit, then plopped him back in his Mom’s arms in a dry towel, Mom just got up and left . But FIRST she took the time to complain and tell the receptionists why (that’s how she learned that he was one of 3 owners, so nobody could fire him).
I mean, if that mean man would send a dog off on a long trip home in a wet towel, then berate the Mom in his hospital’s lobby for objecting, what was happening behind closed doors?
We really are lucky dogs!

That’s a scary thought, Tink! Let’s just hope he was having a really bad day. I can’t remember if my post days it but dad said he would break in to get her out if they locked her in. They would never do that though. They are truly an amazing group of people and we love them so much. *Ear licks*

No – the lady at the dest whispered that his temper was a problem and that “he wasn’t there often.”
But Mom told her even once was too much and she would never chance it. She said it was the way he handled himself every bit as much as what he did. Impulsive and MEAN spirited to the 4-legs and the 2-legs.
BUT, every single person at my vet is super – even when it is late and we can tell they are tired, they are still nice to both of us, and very patient.
I hope Macy is healing really fast, and that all the dopey stuff is gone now. I know you have been worried.

Poor Noodle thinking he’d lost his friend/sister. I have to admit I couldn’t watch the video. So glad the surgery is over and it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Now your real work and steel determination begins. I know you will do everything you can to be sure Macy’s leg heals well. Keeping you in prayer. Oh, and Lucy wants Noodle to come visit. He, he.

Her cries are hard to deal with. There’s no calming her down when she gets going. She’s spending more time sleeping than crying now. Noodle wants you to tell Lucy that he has a lot of work to do here. He’s taking his supervising position very seriously. *Hugs*

I’m sorry you were scared, Noodle. What a good brother you are to keep watch over Macy.
Tell Mom that I’m thinking about her, I remember several slumber parties with our pups after they had surgery.
The X-rays were interesting to see, tell her thanks for posting them.
I’m glad Macy’s surgery is over. Hopefully the anesthetic will have worn completely off by tomorrow.

Noodle – you are a wonderful guard dog/companion for Macy now – just keep her company when you can. You will reassure her!!!

Glad that the surgery went well. Shelby sends her love and says that it was not easy and she didn’t have any pins in her leg. It was just the CCL repair. Take care Samantha and family. We know what you are going through

How did they do the repair?

They built a new tendon with some kind of wire. Scar tissues grows around it and it forms a very strong bond. The leg was in a case for a few weeks until the stitches were removed. The same surgeon did our friends dog and she has been great for two years.
