Good morning, friends!
Remember how I told you all that Macy needed surgery on her knee? Well, it turns out that the surgery is going to be much more complicated than originally explained. Now that the orthopedic surgeon has seen the x-rays, she thinks there’s a tear of Macy’s cruciate ligament. So instead of simply deepening the groove in Macy’s bone for her kneecap to sit on, Macy is going to be getting a plate and screws in her knee during a surgery called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) What the BLEEP?!?!?! 😯
Not only is the surgery different but the price just went up by anywhere between $1,000-$3,200 and is now estimated between $3,124-$5,719! The insurance company will be covering 90% but Mom is still freaking out.
She’s not just freaking about the money. She’s freaking out about the invasiveness of the surgery and the increased downtime compared to the other surgery (it went from 14 days to approximately 4-6 months). You all have seen Macy. How in the world are Mom and Dad going to keep her calm for months when they can’t even keep her calm for a full hour?!
Mom is hoping that when the surgeon sees Macy in person… dog?…no, person – that she’ll find Macy’s ligament intact and she’ll only have to do the basic surgery.
Her surgery is scheduled for 2:30 pm tomorrow, 2/17. Mom and Dad have to drop her off at 11:00 am for pre-op bloodwork. Then, they’re going to go back around 2:00 so they can speak with the surgeon about everything.
Friends, I think it’s time that I go on vacation. Maybe Mrs. Lexi’s Mom will let me come stay with her during this catastrophe. No, I KNOW she will! Mrs. Lexi’s Mom aka Mom#2, can you come pick me up please?
I’ll update you guys as soon as I have info!
Oh no that really sucks!! Is Macy a foodie? I’m thinking lots of frozen Kongs, and keeping her tethered to you on the couch / next to you on the floor on a bed…tends to be a lot easier on the pup than total crate rest. Or at least that’s what we found. I hope it goes as well as can be, beaming positive vibes your way!

oh bro, that are scary news… yes… it is a mission impawsible for such an engerizer bunny to rest for such a long time… and I hope hope hope the doc will see her tomorrow and he finds a good way to heal her knee …. all our paws are crossed and we will wait with you till good news come from the vets both…. I’m so sorry for you and your pawrents, I can only imagine what sad thoughts go through their heads and what sleepless nights they will have while worrying for her beloved wild child…

I think she’s going to need to be tied down. Like hog-tied! I bet if you and Macy ever entered the same room at the same time, the world would explode from all of the energy. BOL! *ear licks*

Perhaps the vet will suggest “slowing her down” with meds? I know that we had a lot of concerns trying to keep Ray calm for the 6 months of his heart-worm treatment. You just have to explore as many options as you can find.

Yes, Mom and Dad are REALLY hoping to be able to sedate her. Thanks for stopping by! Hi, Ray!!! *ear licks*

Bless her heart!! Yes that does sound so much more invasive. But she will feel so better in the end, right? Sending calming vibes your way! XOXO – Bacon

I can recommend hemp oil with CBD to help calm a dog. We had a terrier who was quite anxious and it took the edge off enough that we could sleep all night. It won’t solve your problem, but since hemp is naturally anti-inflammatory, it could help on several levels.

I wish that we could obtain that for her but I don’t think it’s an option. ~Noodle’s Mom

Human grade. Beef and cheese flavor for dogs! It helped my terrier’s anxiety and it has brought a miracle of vision for my once nearly blind poodle.

That’s incredible! I think her insurance will cover this too because we have a homeopathic rider that covers herbal remedies. Thank you SO much!

What policy do you have? What company? Looking for insurance for our new dog.

Trupanion. You pick your deductible and the price adjusts accordingly. We pay $39.99. the plan is $34.99 but we got the $5 rider that covers physical therapy, acupuncture, homeopathic, massage, and something else. We have a $300 deductible per ailment, not incident.

Oh NO!! Mom feels your pain. Having to keep even a more docile pet inactive is the pits. Maybe more kenneling would be a better alternative to sedatives. Those cause problems as well (constipation, slower heart rate). You can come to Nebraska and we can have soooo much fun!

Kenneling is good. Someone also suggested letting Macy on the couch with a leash on. That’ll help to keep her from getting depressed.
Nebraska, huh? Hmmm…

YIKES! Praying for the simpler surgery for everyone’s sake. And Noodle, I will hop in the dog mobile with the wheels turned your direction as soon as your Mom gives the ok. ❤ P.S. You will now have to deal with 2 big dogs here (Lucy and Riley). Riley (70 lbs) will leave you alone, but Lucy (57 lbs) will want you to play like Macy does. 🙂

Oh no, Noodle. We are so sorry and will keep our fingers and paws crossed it’s not as bad as the worst case scenario. Have some faith before you go off on your vacation, ok sweetie? 💗 Then take a deep breath and we’ll figure out how to best deal with activity/confinement for your adorable sister.

Yes, that’s true. It’s not the worst case scenario. When I was just taking my deep breath, I realized that if Macy has to be confined, I’m free! No being chased! Wahooooooooooooo! *ear licks*

OH NOOOOOOOO! WOW…..that’s a huge surgery compared to the other which was huge in its’ own way……..let’s hope the doctor tomorrow says something different OR gets in there and realizes it can be done less invasively or SOMETHING. So happy you have insurance though…..what a blessing huh?! We will be saying BIG HUGE prayers for Macy tomorrow (and your Mom too!). Moms do a lot of daily freaking out but when the word “BIG SURGERY” is used – well – freaking is going to happen!
Love, Angel Sammy

If Mom didn’t have insurance, she would be hiding in a corner crying. Hey, maybe when the doctor opens her up, you can put kitty magic in the incision so that it’s not as bad as they think it is and the can do a smaller surgery! *ear licks*

Hi Noodle,
That is a lot to be happening, poor mom she’s going to need some extra Noodle cuddles.
Praying for Macy’s surgery and recovery that it would all go smoothly and complication free.
I hope the lesser surgery can be done, if not maybe the dr will have suggestions on helping Macy stay calm and settled during her recovery. Praying for the rest of you as well. Hugs and cuddles, Mrs. Margret

Mrs. Margret, I did a super good Noodle Snuggle this morning. Mom squatted down to give me a kiss goodbye and I nuzzled into her and we stayed like that for a super long time. Then I gave her super gentle kisses. *ear licks*

That’s not good news. I found that following some treatment for Barkley, where he had to be calm and quiet for a few weeks using a diffuser with Frankensence essential oil really calmed him down. Or just put a drop on the back of Macy’s neck. I use that on Abby for thunderstorms and it instantly calms her.
