Hellooooooooooooooo! Is anyone out there? It’s me – Noodle! Did you forget me? I’ve been gone forever.
I’ve been away for like 3 weeks! Sorry, I had nothing on my mind to talk about, I guess.
But! Today, I have updates to…update…you on.
Mom & Dad were finally able to take Macy to the 2nd vet for an evaluation.
Aside from her hip dysplasia, it turns out Macy has a Grade 3 medial patellar luxation (kneecap out of place) and has arthritis in the same knee.
According to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (click for their article on pattelar luxation), the difference in grading is:
So Macy is going to have knee surgery next week (we hope). In the meantime, she got cold laser therapy on her hips today.
Mom keeps saying, “Thank God for pet insurance!” I guess it’s going to cost a lot of dollars – $2,100-2,500. With the pet insurance, Mom only pays 10%. Thank DOG! Otherwise I think we might all starve to death because Mom would be broke and we wouldn’t be able to eat!
Speaking of eating, Mom switched my food again. Instead of eating Natural Balance LID Duck and Pea formula, I’m eating Fish & Sweet Potato formula. My itching has been at an all-time high so Mom is trying a different protein. Mom is pretty sure I’m allergic to grains and so she gets super mad when I get out into the bird room and eat their pelleted food which has corn and all sorts of grainy things in it. Then, I go outside and eat seed from under the bird feeder. Oh, and don’t forget that I like to find single kibbles that Macy and Molly knock out of their crates. Yes, I am all sorts of itchy.
Okay, onto the “something weird”. Last October, I had what Mom and Dad thought may have been a seizure. I had been laying in bed with Mom napping in the afternoon when I all of a sudden I started shaking really bad. Then my legs shot out to my sides and were stiff. I couldn’t stand. My head was moving back and forth and my eyes were buggy. It lasted for probably 2 minutes they said.
Well, today, it happened again. I was laying on the back of the couch and Mom thought I was scratching as usual. After about 30 seconds, she turned around to see that this weird thing was happening again. This time, the only different thing that happened was that I coughed twice during the “episode”. It lasted maybe another 3 minutes once Mom noticed what was happening.
Mom is going to call the vet in the morning because after a lot of research and video watching, she thinks it’s something called Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (aka Spike’s Disease). It looks like this:

There’s not a whole lot of info out there but here’s the basics: http://www.canineepilepsy.co.uk/cecs.html. It can be triggered by gluten!
The good news is, a) it’s not really epilepsy at all even though the name makes it sound like it, and b) it’s not life-threatening.
Mom will call Dr. H in the morning to discuss this more to be sure of the diagnosis that Google helped her come too.
No worries, friends. I’m fine. Just a little tired now but I’ll be a-ok!
I’ll be back soon when I know more about Macy’s surgery and my diagnosis.

we will cross all paws and fingers and all boyparts we have for the surger appointment… and we hope so much that you get good news from your vet Noodle…. please don’t eat the snacks you find outside and around the crates, to get the itchies is awful… and the backscratcher fod dogs is not invented yet, so you better wait a little before you eat the fabulous finds from the berd feeder ;o)

Oh Noodle…….good to hear from you but NOT good to hear the word “seizure” – however maybe your Mom got it right and it’s not something to be overly concerned about? Hope so…..as for Macy, glad your Mom has pet insurance – that’s an expensive procedure but should fix her RIGHT UP! We hope!

Oh, corn (and wheat) …yep our crew has allergies to that too, esp. Belle pup. Try hard not to snack on the forbidden stuff Buddy I know it’s tempting.
I’m sorry you’ve had seizures, even a couple is a lot for moms and dads to watch their pups have. I’m glad that it doesn’t sound serious, and that Mom is checking it out with your vet. Since gluten is involved maybe the forbidden snacking is adding to those too?

Yikes! That cramping syndrome thing looks scary. One more reason to stay off the stray kibbles and bird seed (gluten?). Good luck to you with your official diagnosis from a different doctor besides Dr. Google. And good luck to Macy with her knee surgery. Mom had knee surgery once and it worked great. So glad you are back – we were getting worried over here. Sounds like Macy’s knees are like Rivers – just much worse. They never gave the official name, or grade, but the description of patellar luxation is spot on. (Her’s must not be too bad though for them not to be too concerned.)
I will swear by the laser therapy though. Bear went from unable to walk in October to running around – he even runs up the few steps I have on the back deck, taking them two at a time! Not sure the science behind it, but it works.
Bear also has seizures – thankfully his is controlled by phenobarbital. Hopefully, Noodles can be easily controlled too.

Watch River’s legs for bowing. That’s a prime indicator of bad luxation. We’re so happy Bear is doing better. For now, the doctor says I don’t need medicine. They’re not really seizures. It’s actually body cramping. As long as they don’t get as frequent as monthly, no medicine for me!

Noodle. sweet boy, now I know why you and your Mom have been “off the grid” for a while. Jeff can’t eat gluten or corn, which also means he can’t eat any meat from animals who have been fed that. You are what your eat ate. 100% grass fed beef, no chicken or pork or anything else that ate corn. With that in mind, maybe the fish and potato formula will be your best bet. Please try to not sabotage your good diet! Prayers for you and Macy. P.S. Lexi loved the cold laser therapy. It helped her hip a lot.

Sorry about blowing your Mom’s mind, Noodle. Jeff figured this out. He’s not allergic to meat, just the grain that is in it from the animal’s diet. Let’s hope the fish weren’t fed corn. And of course you can come and sit at the table with us and have your very own plate. No gluten or corn will be served Tomorrow I am making mousaka with grass fed beef. (Anticipating your next question, no mouses or mooses were harmed of this meal)

Wow! That’s terrible news about Macy’s knee. I hope she does well.
Cockers have a lot of problems with allergies too. So far Chester has been spared this problem. Hope you feel better.
That seizure in the video looked similar to what Chester has had only twice in his life that we know of. We were wondering if it had anything to do with his Heart Guard, since it’s one of the very rare side effects, and seemed to happen within a day of a dose. We skipped the dose this month because the ground is frozen and there aren’t any bugs around this time of year. Will let you know what happens next month.

The surgery isn’t the problem, the aftercare is. Trying to keep Shelby quiet for 3 months was a horror. We haven’t been doing anything interesting for a while either. Feel better soon.
