When Mom ordered the Wisdom Panel DNA Test Kits, she also ordered (2) Avian DNA Sexing Kits from HealthGene.com.
Cheney, is a cockatiel and cockatiels are sexually dimorphic – males and females are visually different. We know for a fact that Cheney is a boy. See his bright yellow head and bright orange cheeks? Both signs of a boy!
The reason we needed the (2) tests is that Paco & Conrad – our resident Green-Cheek Conures – are a type of parrot that show no visual difference between males and females (aka monomorphic). Most parrots are monomorphic.
Because we didn’t know for sure that they were boys it was driving Mom crazy. Mom was conflicted because, generally, parrots are more “friendly” towards the opposite sex AND if Paco and Conrad were females, they should be laying eggs by now. Even though we have only had them for a year, the person who had them before us had them for 2 & 5 years respectively.
Well, the test results came back and….it’s a shocker!
THEY’RE BOTH GIRLS!
Luckily, Mom mostly calls Paco, Pocky to begin with because she certainly can’t be Paco anymore. Conrad is going to have to become Connie. BOL!
Wait a second…this means more sisters! OH NO!!!!
Things sure have been exciting around your house lately!!

Maybe Kismet will finally get a girlfriend, yes?! He can come and take girls on a date. But the AZ to FL trip is a long way to go. Maybe meet halfway?
Your Mom is too funny! Your house is very fun. We are pretty boring.

Kismet is a girl! She lays eggs now. Hmmm, I wonder how she’d feel about Cheney? You can come over any time!

My Jessy human has birdies too! She has Grover the cockatiel, who’s a girl and lays eggs, and Frankie the Indian ringneck, who’s also a girl. They have a whole room to themselves with their cages and lots of toys. She also has one parakeet she calls the Yellow Guy.

My mom used to have an Indian ringneck named Zoey! Or birds share their room with the fish and our turtle. I like your mom’s birds’ names! *Ear licks*

I never had a bird, but was good friend with a cockatoo who came to board at the vet where I worked. I was the only one that “Sidney” wouldn’t bite, and would talk to. I don’t think his owners believed he talked, but he would chat up a storm with me. I often heard, in a deep yet sweet, lilting voice, “I love you.” 🙂

Very cool! My mom had a cockatiel named Muppet. For about a year or so nobody knew if she were male or female (She is a cinnamon pearl whitefaced cockatiel), until she laid an egg! When we got the three kitties, they would always scare Muppet and stress her out all day, so the peeps found a new home for her…my breeder, who also keeps birds! That’s how my mom got to meet me and start showing me, so I’m grateful to Muppet!

When I was a teacher, I had many kids with weird names. I would keep calling them the same name.

I’m sure it came as a shock! I have a cockatiel named Bella and they definitely can be hard to sex if they don’t have color distinctions, that’s for sure!
