Fostering a dog with medical needs is an emotional rollercoaster.

At 8:30 this morning, Molly and I set off on the hour ride to the pet dentist – the dentist that, according to my vet, had reasonable prices.

When we made the appointment with the dentist we were told not to feed Molly breakfast so that if we chose to do so, the procedure could be done immediately after the consult.

I was SO excited thinking that today was the day my girl would start to feel better and be out of pain.
Then we had our consult with the dentist and got an estimate for the procedure and extractions: $1,584.08!!! That DIDN’T include any of the incisor extractions – just 2 canines and 2 molars. The visit itself was $95!!!

I left there, Molly in tow, completely disheartened. Here’s this poor dog with toothaches and I can’t get anything done for her without winning the lottery or losing my house. She didn’t ask for this life. She didn’t ask to live on the street. She didn’t ask to sit in the shelter for 5 months with no one showing interest in her because she looked old and had a false positive heartworm test.

So I cried. I cried because it all seemed so hopeless. People have been so incredibly kind to donate their hard-earned money and here I am getting the runaround (for lack of a better word) from everyone at a hefty cost.

Then the light bulb went off. Our friend Michelle runs FurEver Friends Rescue, a local 501(c)(3). Since we got Molly she has been telling me to take her to the vet she uses. You know how it is, though – when you’re comfortable with someone (i.e., your vet), you don’t want to go see someone else just because they might be cheaper. We were told that extracting molars and canines requires specialized equipment that our local vet did not have. That made us think that we HAD to go to specialist – that it would be unlikely that any general vet wouldn’t be able to do it.

I called Michelle on my way home and told her everything. I begged her to get me in with her vet. Of course, being the amazingly awesome person that she is, she immediately called her vet for me. She called me back 10 minutes later to tell me that based on the info she gave them on Molly, the procedure would be approximately $550.00.

Molly goes in tomorrow morning at 9:30 for her consult and her procedure, if we can get the money together, will be sometime next week.

Our current balance left in Molly’s Fund is $260.92. We need to raise at least an additional $290.00 to get this done for her. Please, if you have any spare change, a dollar, a check, a money order, credit card, ANYTHING, please consider donating to Molly’s Fund. If you do not feel comfortable donating through the GoFundMe website (gofundme.com/SavingMolly17), please contact me personally to make other arrangements at SavingMolly17@gmail.com .

  1. Sorry, forgot the price from the other vet. I know this is no picnic. Kali has 4 teeth left and she is allergic to commercial cat food and had to be on a hard kibble diet for many years. The allergy is no longer flaring so she can have soft food now….she’s making up for lost time.

    • Hi, sweet girls. We are doing a foster to adopt program. We got her from the county animal services and the only medical they cover is preventatives and general sicknesses if THEY treat them. No dental. That’s why we pulled her out of there – so we could get her the medical attention she needed.

      • Yes, it’s all very confusing and frustrating. As soon as we get her taken care of medically, she’s going to be officially adopted by us. We just had to make sure we could take care of her the way she deserves before committing fully.

Kill shelters are just awful!!! Macy came from a kill shelter. Molly was at a no-kill shelter but she was there for too long. It was hurting my heart.

Hope you all are having a nice weekend!

        Love,
        Samantha

It’s okay, we just didn’t want you to have to pay fur sumfin’ dat shulda been covered. Weez glad yous saved her and weez sure she is too. We hate kill shelters. Unfurtunately we live in a very backward area dat seems stuck sumwhere in da late 18ff early 19ff century specially when it comes to ideas ’bout anipals. Take care of Molly.

It’s so frustrating how expensive medical care can be….for both humans and pets. We gave a little bit. I wish I could do more…but we’re looking at possible surgery for one of our senior girls right now. If she doesn’t need it (hopefully) I will try to come back and give a little more.

    • Oh, yes! I can’t believe I forgot the link: gofundme.com/SavingMolly17. Thank you for the kind words. Everyone’s emotional support has been just as helpful as the financial support, if not more.

  10. oh i hope they can get her fixed up!!! I can’t believe the shelter didn’t just get this stuff done. So glad she has you!

    • On one hand I’m mad but on the other I kind of understand. I mean, I guess that’s what allows them to be a no-kill shelter. If they operated and fixed everything, they probably couldn’t afford to care for dogs like Molly who were there long-term. At least she didn’t get euthanized!

Oh Samantha I totally relate to your frustration & tears about Molly & her teeth!! I felt so helpless when Siddhartha henry got sick in July & it spiraled out of control. If it had not been for Sheila getting us into her Vet’s I would have had our ‘littul Purrince’ put to sleep.
We are definitely ‘birds of a feather’……these 4 leggeds pick us I am sure!!!
