Last Friday, Mom took Franklin to the vet. It seems that whenever Franklin would try to walk, her right leg would twist and she couldn’t put weight on it.

The vet that Franklin goes to has a resident cat in their office. She had a blast sniffing Franklin’s carrier and scaring the bejeezus out of Franklin.

Luckily, she got into a private room shortly thereafter.

After a very thorough exam and molting 87 million feathers, Franklin’s diagnosis came: an over-stretched tendon or ligament running down the front of her right leg. The vet said that Mom and Dad have been doing everything right and that they just need to continue doing what they’re doing because she’s been improving. Unfortunately, the ligament or tendon will never “tighten” again but the hope is that Franklin will build enough muscle around it that the muscle will do all the work.

Once Franklin gets to her max walking ability, if she’s unable to walk efficiently, they will make a brace for her. Making a brace right now would just ‘enable’ her.

The vet said as long as Franklin is eating and drinking, as well as improving, she sees no reason for euthanasia. If Franklin stops eating and drinking, that’s a different story. Luckily, Franklin’s a pig…err, duck…that eats a lot.

Everyone’s POTP has helped so much. Thank you all!

    • Awww, thank you Pam and Sam!!! Do you know that even my new vet laughed when Mom told her she took Franklin to the vet?! Dr. M laughed and said, “You took your duck to the vet?!” Threw Mom off actually. Thinking about reconsidering using her services.

      • First, my handsome boyfriend, I am very glad the prognosis is good for Franklin. I sure do understand the whole leg thing. I think a trip back to the vet is in my near future.

Next, maybe the reason your doctor laughed about taking a duck to the vet is because a lot of “house-call” vets are used to farm mentalities. They go to see horses and cows, and ducks are just another “commodity.” A different mind-set.

      • Oh no, my beautiful lady! I’m so sorry your leg is still hurty. My vet only sees dogs and cats. Mom just feels that as a vet she should understand that an injured animal is just that…injured and in need of help. Also, when she was here the last time, Dad asked if she knew anything about ducks. She said no which of course was no problem and understandable. Dad went on to explain about Franklin and how he had just built the walker. She laughed. You would THINK that a vet…someone interested in animal science and care….would want to see it with their own eyes. She couldn’t care less. Maybe Mom’s reading too much into it. She feels like the vet is a bit of a sham though. 87 million *ear licks* Love, Noodle
