My new dweeb of a sister likes water. A LOT! She likes baths, the hose, the pool, water bowls, and now we’ve discovered that she likes Franklin’s pond. Yeah, Franklin our duck. Her pond. That’s filled with duck poop.
Macy was outside and watching Franklin in her pond. When Mom took Franklin out (Franklin’s still not walking), Macy went in. Now she smells like duck poop.
Every time I think there’s hope for her….
Anyway, Mom has being doing a lot of research on what could be wrong with Franklin seeing as funds for an avian vet are not available at this time and the niacin isn’t helping. It seems that poor little Franklin may have hardware poisoning (aka metal poisoning), more specifically, zinc poisoning. Unfortunately, the treatment for zinc poisoning is VERY expensive ($500-$1000). It involves injections, surgery, multiple day stay in the hospital, and antibiotics. The vet is due to be here on the 4th to see Macy and me. If Franklin is still not able to walk, we are going to ask the vet to do the humane thing. Of course, if she takes a turn for the worse before then, Mom will take her to the vet before then for the same.
If it were just a matter of Franklin being unable to walk because of a partial paralysis of some kind, Mom would make the necessary accommodations for Franklin to live a happy and comfortable life as an indoor duck. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Zinc poisoning is fatal unless treated at the first signs of illness. Franklin is already 2 weeks in. Mom feels horribly guilty for not realizing the possibility of metal poisoning AND for not being able to afford the proper care necessary.
Another option is for Mom to find a rescue that can get Franklin the care she needs. So she’s researching that now. That would obviously be the better way to go, even if it means Franklin moving away. If you have any information on a rescue that can do this, please let me know.
Please keep Franklin in your prayers ❤

Ok, it was a little bit funny. I just can’t believe her though. Mom put out a big water dish for us (a large saucer). Macy stands in it! I mean, how am I supposed to drink out that when it has toe juice in it?!?! Yuck! *ear licks* Noodle

I send POTP to your Franklin and I hope there is a way to help your duck-friend…. We once brought our rooster to the vet (useless, the vet was not really an expert for birds) because the huskies had an appointment anyway. Our neighbor came and asked if she can drive with us, because her cat was not well. And then we started with a rooster, two dogs and a cat on board, what escaped from her box on the way to the vet… my dad said he felt like stranded in the deepest hell :o)

What other symptoms are there? Two weeks? Has Franklin been paralyzed the whole time? I had a duck die of West Nile virus but didn’t realize till after the fact. It was a bad summer for it here. She was sick nearly two weeks, getting worse as it went along, and I couldn’t afford an avian vet at the time. Turns out chickens aren’t prone to it, but ducks are highly susceptible.
I’m so sorry your Franklin is ill. I wish I could help. Paws crossed.

Hi Mrs. Flea! Thanks for coming by. 2 weeks ago, Franklin stopped walking. Her feet and legs can move, she’s just not strong enough to hold herself up. Her appetite started going away 2 days ago. Also her feathers are falling out like crazy. This time last year she had a major molt, though, so we’re not sure if that’s related. Initially, my Mom thought it was a niacin deficiency but she has since been supplementing her with a critical care vitamin as well as Rooster Booster Poultry Cell. Every night Mom brings her in the house and lets her soak in a warm bath. She doesn’t seem to be egg-bound (Mom felt around). Plus, Franklin hasn’t really laid eggs in over a year. When she does lay, it doesn’t have the hard outer shell. We heard that West Nile is appearing in a town about 40 miles south of us so I guess it could be that.
Thank you again for coming our way!

Aw man. I’m sorry. This is the right time of year for molting, definitely. I’m glad she’s not egg bound, and I certainly hope that she gets better instead of worse. 😦

Hoping for the best for Franklin. Should Macy be swimming in the duck water? It might not be a good idea.

She wasn’t swimming, just standing. Franklin’s pond is a black stock tub (1.5′ x 2.5′, only 5″ deep). Dad had just changed the water so it’s not like it’s scummy with algae but it did have one or two poops on it.

My gang likes the ducks pools also and like to chase them when they get in the duck pen so I try and keep them out of the pen. Im sorry you have to find a new home but yes it is better than the alternative

I’m obsessed with duck poop and food. Macy is obsessed with duck water and feathers. Before Franklin got sick, Macy enjoyed chasing her. ❤ *ear licks*

Oh no…not Franklin. We are so sorry to hear of his difficulties. We will turn on the purring machine and mom says not to feel guilty as you didn’t know my friend. You have done much and hopefully it won’t be zinc poisoning.
