Awhile back, I told you that Mom and Dad used to have a turtle and tortoise farm (they bred reptiles for the pet trade). I promised I would tell you more and I’m going to do just that.

Prior to meeting Mom in 2005, Dad was a reptile enthusiast. He had been breeding turtles and tortoises for 35 years and had a pet store with a friend down in south Florida. Mom came home from college on spring break and Grandpa took her to Dad’s reptile store. Mom had no idea at this time that she was talking to her future husband. Mom and Dad quickly became friends, although Dad wasn’t interested in being “just friends”.

In October 2005, Hurricane Wilma took South Florida for a ride. It was during that storm that Mom realized she loved Dad.

Fast forward to January 2007, Mom and Dad are head over heels for one another and they have just opened their own reptile business. They started to breed so many wonderful species of animals. It would take me forever to list them all, or to even go through all of the old pictures to show you every kind, so here are a few:

I could go on forever with the pictures. There were also newts, salamanders, snakes, frogs, toads, lizards, chameleons, and more.

The business itself was wonderful but the laws around ownership and exportation of certain turtle species were changing rapidly and became “blurry”.  Keeping up with the most current laws is very difficult in the reptile industry and an “oops” can get you time in federal prison. Not wanting to risk doing something illegal, the business was closed in 2013.

It was and still is very sad. Reptiles made up so much of Dad’s life. Mom became a reptile lover throughout the years and it’s hard for her because Dad doesn’t like talking about or looking at them anymore but she does. After all, it’s what brought them together. She tells him all the time that he got to make a living off his passion, even if only for a short time. Most people never get that opportunity.

So, there you have it. A look into the past.

He is currently in hibernation , but I will save this post for him. bet he will love it. he is single like me and we can’t find a girlfriend for him, this kind of tortoises is rare here :o(

Noodle we love reptiles here..if you go back through some old posts you may see some! we have recently rescued from our driveway (it’s very long we are in 11 acres) a snake neck tortoise who was dry and in need of some water…after ponging us out with his scent hahaah he was placed in our dam and I am pleased to say we have spotted two babies so far! I was watching them today 🙂 we have a lot of blue-tongue lizards and stumpy tail lizards…eastern brown snakes (which although beautiful are the second deadliest land snake in the world…yikes..our Forrest is lucky to survive a bite!) skinks and legless lizards..red bellied black snakes and tiger snakes..and lots of frogs too! it must have been hard but I can see with unscrupulous people that the laws would indeed be getting harder to keep up with ..customs just the other night on tv had many beauties destined for the black market crammed into horrid containers..people realy are nit too nice sometimes…great pictures of lovely little creatures 🙂 loves Fozziemum xx

    • Mom’s dream used to be to go to Australia & New Zealand because of the incredible wildlife. Too bad Mom doesn’t like to fly. It’ll be pretty difficult to walk there 😉 We are super jealous of all the wonderful animals you have there…except your deadly snakes. You can keep those 🙂

Hi Noodly Smoodly buddy! That was such a nice story and without that history, they would not be together on a small farm and taking care of everybody. Tell your Mom and Dad that if I was there, I would scare the tail of Jamison (and a few other creatures) and then give big licks to your Mom and Dad. I really don’t like cats ‘cos they spit and have sharp claws but if I charge at them, they panic! After all that, you could show me around your place! Woof! Ray.

That was a beautiful love story ❤ and some lovely critters. Pity that some humans makes life so difficult for others by being greedy and unkind to animals.

  8. What a great story about how your mom and dad met. Mine met dancing, and that is why I am still the dancing schnauzer! As far as reptiles, all I ever see around our house are blue tailed lizards. If a pup like me tries to catch one, the tail falls off and burns my mouth. I hear they grow a new blue tail for their next victim to grab!

    • You get those around your house?!?! So cool! We have brown anoles, green anoles, race runners, and a couple types of skinks. I’ve never chased a lizard before and after hearing about your mouth being on fire, I think I’ll keep it that way!

  9. I’ve never heard of any of those lizards, but as long as they don’t have blue tails I would be willing to try one of each of them for you if I ever come to visit. 🙂

    • Very true! Do you know Mom and Dad’s wedding almost got called off because of a hurricane?! Lucky for them it moved WAY east and was one of the ones that hit NY in 2011. The only bad part about that is a lot of Mom’s family is in NY and couldn’t fly out. Crazy hurricanes!

  12. Crikey Noodle ….. that was so interesting, mate!! AND you Mom and Dad met through your Mom visiting your Dad’s reptile store!! How good is that? My Mum and Dad met on a tennis court. They both love reptiles though. Even all of our dangerous ones and there’s sure plenty of them out here. They have rescued three Eastern long necked turtles over the years that they have found injured on the roads. They’ve nursed them back to health and then released them in a dam near where they found them. They LOVE turtles. Your poor Dad ….. I hope he can come to terms with losing his business and get back to talking about and looking at reptiles again one day soon.
