To my friends who are celebrating Hanukkah, our family wishes you and yours a Happy Hanukkah! I talk a lot about Christmas but we celebrate Hanukkah in our house, too. I look forward to sharing pictures of our menorah with you each night 🙂

Hi Noodle – I’m confused! When I see candles, they are usually sticking out of something which people eat (and don’t share!). That menorah thing does not look to tasty. What do you do with it? Ray.

I was very confused at first, too!
Many years ago, the Jews and the Syrian-Greeks were at war. A small group of Jews called the Maccabees defeated the army and reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. When they went to light the menorah, they discovered they only had enough oil to last 1 night. Amazingly enough, the oil lasted for 8 nights – the miracle of Hanukkah! So, now on Hanukkah, people of the Jewish faith use a menorah that holds 8 candles (9, really but I’ll explain later). Each of the candles represents a night that the oil burned. The 9th candle, the shamas, is used to light the other candles. Pretty cool, huh?
Oh! On Hanukkah, there’s lots of tasty foods, too! There are these potato things called latkes and there are many donuts and cookies!

Wow Noodle……… you’re smart! So the Jews and Syrian-Greeks were fighting like cats and dogs? I can understand that. Cats think they own everything and never give up anything without a fight. Potato things, donuts and cookies ………. I’m drooling over Dad’s keyboard just thinking about them, but my favorite treat is still rutabaga. Do you have any of that at Hanukkah?

Hi Shmoodle – I’ve been thinking about this and have to ask how do they light the candle that is used to light the other 8?

A lighter! Can you believe it? I don’t think that’s how they did it back in Israel but that’s just my opinion

Well if they can use a lighter for the first one, why can’t they use a lighter for all the others? This is very mystifying. Are your Mum and Dad othodogs (or something that sounds like that)?

Hehe. Humans are weird. My mom is Jewish, Dad is Roman Catholic. Mom isn’t…that word, whatever it is.

So what does your Mum do while your Dad celebrates Christmas? People certainly make things complicated don’t they?

Mom celebrates Christmas with Dad because that’s when his family visits. You know what’s even more complicated? Mom’s birthday is December 30th. All 3 holidays lumped together!

That’s so cool. My Mum’s birthday is Dec 19! Want to hear something really funny? My Dad’s Dad was researching the family history and he came to the conclusion that he came from Polish Jew stock. He was not happy about that for some reason and was totally surprised. My Dad says that his Dad was named David, and he had two brothers Bernard and Ruben ……….. so why the surprise? I don’t get it but you might!

That’s really cool! Dad’s family on his mom’s side is Polish. So is Mom’s family but on her dad’s side. That’s funny about the names! I agree, it shouldn’t have been a surprise *snicker*

Cats and Dogs hahahahaha! I don’t know about Rutabaga…hmmm. I can’t remember if I ever told you this but my dad’s parents have a dog named Rudee and Dad calls him Rud-abaga. Did you see that I got to try sweet potatoes last night? Those are delicious!!!
